- Description
The music theory and musicology seminar is conducted together with students of musicology at the University of Hamburg and in joint teaching with Dr. Julia Freund (University of Hamburg, Musicology).
Musical transitions connect, structure a course or take shape - they are a temporary and at the same time essential musical design feature. In this seminar, we will take a broad perspective on the functions and different manifestations of musical transitions. The topic of the seminar allows us to work across historical and genre boundaries and to consider not only pieces from art and popular music but also sound examples that are not subject to the concept of a work.
We will deal with transitions as formal elements, with compositional techniques of mediation, with popular music techniques of transition such as scratching or the cross-fading of songs, as well as with the linking of pieces of music in album and concert dramaturgies. The analysis of selected examples will be accompanied by readings of music theory treatises, texts by composers and theory-building reflections on transition as a humanities concept. In order to gain a practical understanding of the phenomenon, students will also create and discuss their own musical transitions.- Credits
