- Description
Western art music is omnipresent - especially at a conservatory. Over the centuries, it has spread globally, is played on all continents and interpreted by musicians from the most diverse backgrounds. Its instrumentation is largely standardized, its notation standardized - a universal, global musical language that is understood worldwide.
But alongside this musical world, there are numerous other musical cultures that are based on millennia-old traditions. Their instruments have often hardly changed over long periods of time, their notation systems follow their own orders, and their sound aesthetics are based on other concepts of harmony, structure and function. This music is deeply embedded in social, mythical and spiritual contexts and can only be understood from within them. Instruments here are far more than mere sound tools - they carry symbolic, ritual and identity-creating meanings.
Despite this rich diversity, non-Western music often remains unheard. While Western art music dominates in the strongholds of music culture, many traditional forms of music hardly have a place there. Their otherness makes access difficult, but it is precisely these differences that open up fascinating new perspectives.
The seminar approaches this sonic diversity from different angles. Rather than looking at the music of a single continent in isolation, the seminar will examine different musical cultures in relation to each other. The focus is on similarities in instrument making, the emergence of different sound worlds and the influence of social and spiritual contexts on musical creation.
Often there are only a few hundred kilometers between fundamentally different musical practices, while at the same time surprising parallels between distant cultures are revealed. These aspects will be illustrated using sound examples, film clips and visual material.
The seminar provides insights into sound figures, myths, meanings, musical structures, melodies, polyphony and the social contexts of traditional musical practices. This creates a multi-layered network of ethnomusicological observations. Those who embark on this journey not only discover a fascinating musical world, but also develop a deeper sensitivity for cultural diversity. The seminar invites you to experience music in the context of traditional cultures - with openness, curiosity and the willingness to understand the foreign in its own logic.
