Description

Propaganda, "Gleichschaltung" and escapism - three buzzwords that are often associated with the years 1933 to 1945 in the Nazi film industry. The seminar examines the diverse relationships between film, music and history at a time of profound political and social (dis)continuities. In addition to the socio-cultural framework conditions, film music in general and the analysis of music films and their cinematic techniques will be addressed. The basic question of any film music analysis regarding the relationship of music to other elements such as sound, language and image is of particular importance for the examination of films from the period 1933 to 1945: To what extent was music used in films to reinforce (political) messages? In addition to the contextualization and analysis of the films, the film composers themselves and their work will also be examined. Practical exercises, both in plenary sessions and in self-study, will round off the seminar program.

The aim is to recognize the extent to which music and film were interwoven and what (sound) traces they have left to the present day. The first session serves to organize and plan the subsequent dates.
