Description

The history of music in the 20th century was shaped to a large extent by global urbanization and the rise of world metropolises, which were at the center of new political and economic networks. This lecture will examine the role of the metropolis in the history of modern music. The metropolis will be examined as an artistic milieu, but also as a musical motif. While the first part of the lecture will focus on the European capitals Vienna, Paris, London and Berlin, New York and Los Angeles as well as metropolises in the global South will also be addressed. The aim is to bring the dialectic between the local and global levels to the fore.
