- Description
The practical and discursive origins of computer music or music with computers can already be clearly seen in the 1970s - not least in György Ligeti's attempt to establish an institute for computer music in Hamburg. Ligeti endeavored to bring research from the American West Coast (Stanford) to the Hanseatic city in order to reconnect Europe with technological and aesthetic developments in contemporary music.
Central to the work with computers were sound and structure synthesis, various models of problem solving, generative algorithms, the possibilities for musical performance practice and, last but not least, aesthetic and psychoacoustic aspects. In addition to individual works, the seminar will focus on the technological innovations and aesthetic discourses of various international computer music centers (Stanford, Utrecht and Paris) in the 1970s.
In view of today's almost completely digitalized living environment, these discourses ultimately also lead directly to questions and problems of our time: What has man made and what has the machine made? What generative potential do computer-aided approaches have for compositional creation? What do we mean by creativity? What aesthetic perspectives do we need to adopt in order to take a critical look at these phenomena?
