Description

Popular songs and melodies were omnipresent in the musical culture of the Renaissance: in manuscript and printed collections of the time, in sacred hymnals, as the tenor of a polyphonic chanson or parody mass, in instrumental dances, fantasias or diferencias. With the diminutions of lute, flute and virginal music, the variation of well-known songs reached a climax, and the melodies of sacred songs were also used by street singers to recite messages about peace treaties and natural disasters and then to sell them as leaflets or pamphlets - sometimes with printed music. In this seminar, the significance of the element "popular song melody" between 1500 and 1650 will be examined and scrutinized in various (musical) texts and contexts. Based on the respective sources of the songs and melodies, their further processing and socio-cultural integration will be examined. Both music-structural and socio-historical aspects play a central role here.
