Description

Dr. Silke Wenzel
From a global perspective, music paths between continents and transcultural developments of music become visible, which carry their own dynamics. In this sense, the lecture "Global Music History" combines European music history with musical developments on other continents. In the second semester, fundamental stages from 1600 to around 1800 are dealt with, i.e. the period in European music history which, as the Baroque and Classical eras, has a decisive influence on today's concert and opera repertoire. From there, we will look further afield, for example to Asia with its flourishing opera and theater forms, or to North and South America, where colonization and missionary work had a lasting impact on musical culture; both also had an echo in Europe, for example in French baroque opera, in instrumental and vocal music of the time and in music theory writings.
The course is designed as a lecture/exercise. International students are welcome.
