LAST BUT NOT LEAST
Dear Friends of the HfMT,
You’d think we’re all set for this season.
The summer festival was colorful and cheerful; we performed the final show of the summer opera to a sold-out house; the winners of the Elise Meyer Competition set the Forum buzzing with a festive concert; our annual “Elphi Concert” is now behind us; and up-and-coming directors gathered at the annual Körber Studio Junge Regie festival.
Besides, it got so hot at one point that doing nothing seemed like the only sensible way to exist.
...done!
But no…: We’re stepping on the gas again.
Over the next two weeks in July, we’ll be enjoying wonderful exam concerts and numerous studio concerts; in between, a successful mix of various events to round out the season.
Here’s a quick guide—you’re warmly invited!
After that, things will calm down a bit.
With summery greetings,
Your HfMT
JAZZ
The JazzHall SummerFestival has kicked off and will be in full swing through Saturday, July 4. In the afternoons, free open-air concerts draw crowds to the festival grounds, and in the evenings, the festivities continue indoors. A few remaining tickets are still available here and there—for example, for the closing concert featuring trumpeter Milena Casado.

Shortly thereafter, the HfMT Big Band will open ELBJAZZ 2026 on stage in the Schiffsbauhalle together with singer China Moses. Our student bands will perform in three additional concerts on the Hamburg Stage at the Blohm & Voss site.

FUTURE
For our summer discussion, we welcome Prof. Dr. Michael Göring, an accomplished, enthusiastic, and witty foundation professional who has played a key role in shaping the German foundation landscape. From 1997 to 2021, he served as a board member and chairman of the ZEIT-Stiftung Ebelin und Gerd Bucerius, and has been a professor at the KMM Institute since 2000. Together with him, we’ll take a look into the future: What role can foundations play in times of change—and how can responsibility be structured so that initiatives endure beyond individual people?
THE PAST AND THE FUTURE
de:colonial monuments lab: How will we remember in the future?
This inter-university teaching project addresses these questions; during the summer semester, it brings together students from the Institute for Culture and Media Management (HfMT), HCU Hamburg, and HAW Hamburg. Taking the historic site of Baakenhafen in Hamburg’s HafenCity as their starting point, the participants are developing artistic, performative, and discursive approaches to the culture of remembrance, decolonization, and public space.
The projects will be presented at the Klimaströme Festival as part of a performative walk aboard the MS Stubnitz and throughout the Baakenhafen. We look forward to spending an afternoon together featuring student contributions, encounters, and discussions about the past, present, and future of urban memory culture.
THEATER
At the end of their fourth semester, students in the theater education program are developing a staged presentation based on their research questions: “What is a bad child?” and “How great is your anger?” To this end, they create a setting that allows them to collectively explore emotional impositions and disruptive figures.

With the German premiere of the opera *Cabildo* by American composer Amy Beach, Elisabeth Wild takes the audience to the International Maritime Museum in Hamburg, which she transforms into the setting for the story, thereby offering a new perspective on maritime history.

SCHOOL PROJECTS
In October 2025, the HfMT took on a partnership with four schools in Hamburg. As part of a grant from the Culture and School Project Fund, students and schoolchildren come together in workshops, rehearsal visits, and joint artistic projects. We’ll be bringing two of these projects to the stage at the end of this semester:
In the “Next Stage” seminar led by Daniel Bucurescu, students developed creative concert formats for the HfMT’s partner schools and are implementing them on-site. The focus was not only on making music, but also on finding new ways to present classical music and making it accessible to a diverse audience. The students are now presenting the results of this research in their own “Black Box” at the HfMT.“

And this is what friendship sounds like: In the seminar on choir and ensemble direction in elementary schools, the students, under the guidance of Luiz de Godoy, focused on “transcultural choir work” and tested the approaches they developed at the Edwin-Scharff-Ring and Westerschule Finkenwerder elementary schools. For weeks, they sang and made music together. Now they’re taking the stage together for a friendship concert featuring the Hamburg Boys’ Choir, a guest choir from Belgium, the Brecht School, and the Hamburg Music Kindergarten.
The “Friendship Sounds” choir concert takes place on July 3 at St. Bonifacius
FAMILY CONCERTS
With the Family Concert Newsletter, the ligeti zentrum’s Wunderland Musik project is launching a new service for families: The goal is to provide parents and children with easy access to information about the wide range of family-friendly concerts, workshops, and musical events in Hamburg.
The newsletter is published monthly and is aimed at all families who are curious about musical offerings and want to discover them easily.
