Actually, everyone here has just flown the nest and is buzzing around the world. The students are on summer vacation or visiting home, finding inspiration in master classes or project work or simply earning money for their studies. Teachers are also using the lecture-free period to focus on other professional areas and recharge their batteries for their intensive work with the artists of tomorrow.
The rest of the staff take care of the house in shifts, tidying, cleaning, planning and organizing so that we can give a warm welcome at the start of the new semester and be a good home to the concentrated creative hustle and bustle.
And you? Are you still dipping your bare feet in refreshing waters and sucking on juicy pieces of melon with relish? Or are you ready for urban temptations and cultural food? Then we have a few tips that are worth a little summer newsletter.

UKRAINIAN VOICES
Vocal ensemble ALTER RATIO
Foto: Max Busel
They arrived on Sunday and began their rehearsals. The singers of the Ukrainian ensemble ALTER RATIO (Latin for "thinking differently") have not seen each other since the beginning of the war in February, have been scattered throughout Europe since then and now have the opportunity to work together again for the first time. The meeting in Hamburg is characterized by the balancing act between resuming artistic work and an emotional exchange about the experiences, strokes of fate, fears and hopes of the past six months. Experiencing them together here is special and moving.
By performing solo and ensemble works of 20th and 21st century choral music, the vocal ensemble, founded in 2010, strives to expand the boundaries of academic singing and establish non-traditional singing techniques and stage experiences. Their rehearsals at the HfMT will culminate in a concert at the Kulturkirche Altona on August 25. They will then travel to the capital for a concert in Berlin Cathedral on August 28.
Tickets for the concert SACRA et PROFANA. Ukrainian Voices concert on August 25 are only available at the box office. The proceeds will go directly to the ensemble as royalties.

For his master's concert on September 8, he is bringing an entire symphony orchestra to the JazzHall stage, along with his best musical friends. Wolf Kerschek himself will be taking the conductor's podium. An evening on which nothing, absolutely nothing can go wrong.
The Junge Norddeutsche Philharmonie, Samantha Wright (clarinet), Mia Knop Jacobsen (vocals), Clara Lucas (vocals), Lucas Etcheverria (guitar) and the Berlin a cappella band Gretchens Antwort will be performing.

SCIENCE AND SOUNDS - OPEN FORUM
The UKE and the Institute for Music Therapy at the HfMT have been working together for many years at the interface between music and medicine. Always thinking and acting in an interdisciplinary way, they focus on topics such as music in medicine, music as medicine, music medicine, music therapy in medicine, music therapy in psychotherapy or psychosocial care and develop research projects and event formats.
To mark the founding of the Center for Music Medicine and Music Therapy at the UKE Hamburg, the 1st Science and Sounds Conference will take place from September 8 to 10 in collaboration with the UKE Hamburg and the International Society for Music in Medicine (ISMM).
The third day of the conference on Saturday, September 10, will take place as an open forum in German and is aimed not only at a specialist audience but also at interested visitors who want to cross disciplinary boundaries and explore new fields of music in medicine.

DO YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE?
Daniela Kiesewetter at the rehearsals for THE MEDIUM
Foto: Yuri Colossale
Due to corona, the highly demanding musical theater project The Medium by Peter Maxwell Davies by directing graduate Daniela Victoria Kiesewetter, which had already been rehearsed to perfection, had to be postponed. As a refresher, we have dug up a few sound bites from the director for you:
In the monodrama for mezzo-soprano solo, we observe a single person on stage who deals with the various versions and states, characters and facets of herself in almost unbearable ambiguity, confronting us as the audience with the probing questions about the true self.
Daniela Victoria Kiesewetter chose the play for her final production as a music theater director and describes the intensive work with just one character as both challenging and rewarding: "I love losing myself in characters. To be able to concentrate on one character, to empathize with their story and to listen to them. First of all, you have to believe them. To allow them to believe that everything they say is true, at least for them. Building a relationship with the character is important. I try to read a lot, to get to know the story, the background to the emotions. But above all to listen: How does she sing something? What does the music say, what does it move in me? And how can I empathize with a singer scenically? I always try to find body languages for the individual states that form a reflection of her singing and the text. The more time you have for a character, the more intensive it is, even in practical collaboration with a singer. In this respect, I find small casts, even a "one-woman show" incredibly exciting."
Davies himself describes THE MEDIUM as more demanding and extreme than anything he had written before. The great soprano and HfMT alumna Constanze Hosemann could be won over for the version in the Forum of the HfMT.
HöR(S)PASS AT THE INTERNATIONAL MENDELSSOHN SUMMER SCHOOL
International Mendelssohn Summer School, rehearsal of the chamber orchestra
The International Mendelssohn Summer School has been a classic at the HfMT for years. For the 16th time, the busy work of the participants will bring our entire building to life in September. There has long been a fan community that does not miss the opportunity to stroll from room to room to attend bassoon, viola, piano or chamber music lessons.
Music students from all over the world are taught in a total of 11 subjects over two weeks and present the results of this fruitful exchange in numerous concerts.
The most convenient way to take part is with the Hör(S)Pass, which entitles you to attend all courses and selected concerts. The International Mendelssohn Summer School will take place this year from September 12 to 24 at the HfMT.
