Dear friends of the HfMT,

We're back and we're really in the mood!

While we're still sorting things out in the teaching department, taking the "first-timers" into our midst and defining new topics, we're already raising the stage curtain and presenting lots of good material, making it difficult to choose once again. For attentive readers, we have also hidden a few semester-opening offers in wild anticipation. Because we still need an enthusiastic audience here and there.

Four different symphony concerts will take place in the Forum in the first two weeks of October. The opening concert of the semester falls on 8 October with a birthday party for Arnold Schönberg, who we will be paying tribute to with chamber music works and large-scale orchestral music.

We also celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Popkurs Hamburg, devote two evenings to Korean culture on the occasion of Hamburg's K-Days, premiere a chamber opera, experience DRAMA! in the theater section, WG requests and the concept of the theater of the future and marvel at the JazzHall, which is constantly buzzing. The screen in the Forum will be used for an epic movie night, we will host two piano master classes as part of the Chopin Festival and that's not all.

The media library has been shining in new splendor for a week now, bringing us impressive documentaries that you can even spend an evening watching at home.

As always, we look forward to your visit! If you would also like to get involved, you can now become a SUPPORTER:IN of the HfMT and thus directly support our students.

With best wishes for October,
Your HfMT

GREAT SYMPHONIC MUSIC

We start with four major symphony concerts and four different programs:

On October 2, we're keeping it classical with Beethoven, Elgar and Mendelssohn. A quote from soloist Viktoria Constien from Prof. Sebastian Klinger's cello class: "The cello offers velvety lows as well as clear and airy highs and is therefore for me the most poetic and soulful of the string instruments. Elgar absolutely emphasizes this versatility in his cello concerto, which for me is what makes the work so magical." Viktoria will be accompanied by the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Prof. Ulrich Windfuhr's conducting class.

On October 6, we welcome the Symphony Orchestra of the Lübeck University of Music under the direction of Christoph Altstaedt with the full-length 9th Symphony by Gustav Mahler. We are delighted about this cooperation!

On October 8, we will open our academic year with a symphony concert of a special kind: the evening is dedicated to the pioneering and timeless neo-tonal composer Arnold Schönberg on the 150th anniversary of his birth and spans the arc from Schönberg's twelve-tone music to free atonality and expressionism to one of his most important role models in the 19th century - Johannes Brahms - whose Piano Quartet in G minor he arranged for orchestra. The symphony orchestra will perform under the direction of Prof. Ulrich Windfuhr.

On October 9, there will be more Schönberg, but this time combined with a Beethoven symphony and an invitation to bathe in the rich orchestral sound.

Incidentally, there is nothing to stop you from attending all four concerts :-)

40 YEARS POPKURS HAMBURG

We are always in love with our current cohort, but for our 40th anniversary, we have a particularly great group of expressive and charismatic musicians. On October 10, the Popkurs Hamburg is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a big, energetic party: a ceremony in the Forum, a concert and party in the JazzHall and finally a dance floor in the foyer of the HfMT. Performances by graduates of the 40th year, surprise guests and DJ Lesley Farfisa.

We have reserved 50 guest tickets for the public. If you would like to join the party, please send an email in response to this newsletter. Places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis! Registration deadline is October 3rd. Good luck!

ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST

Special for cinephiles: on October 11, we're treating ourselves to a movie night in the Movies meet Music series and think the legendary western Once Upon a Time in the West will be nothing short of spectacular here at the Forum. Included is a pre-program with an introduction by film scholar Christoph Dobbitsch, who will tell us why this milestone has stood the test of time so well. The admission price of €5 is unrivaled and we are also giving away 5 copies of the limited special edition of the film in 4k on this evening.

From October 11 to 13, the Hamburg K-Days will take place, in which we - initiated by Prof. Frank Böhme - will participate with two exciting evenings in the JazzHall.

On October 12, it will be sensually exciting and multidisciplinary. After a rice wine aperitif and an introduction, music, dance and Taekwando will combine to create a staged total work of art. The Korean guest artists will be joined by jazz musicians from Hamburg, who will contribute to the stage events with improvisations.
The concert by Ensemble Maegandang on October 21 is a little later in time and will feature traditional instruments with both traditional and contemporary Korean music.

For many, it is a special pleasure not to receive the finished result, but to experience the creative process. Listening to how music is created, how it is worked on and polished, how variations are tried out and discussed before they can be presented to the public.
As part of the Chopin Festival Hamburg and in cooperation with the HfMT, two master classes for piano students are offered, to which we warmly welcome interested guests.

HAMBURG MEETS CHICAGO

Tracye Eileen
Tracye Eileen

Among the many jazz events, we have picked out the Hamburg/Chicago session with Tracye Eileen on October 17: "Eileen has a voice," says one critic, "that rivals the greatness of legends like Billie Holiday or Nina Simone. Her soothing, uplifting and swinging interpretations cast these classics in a whole new light." Tracye Eileen will be performing at the JazzHall together with jazz musicians from Hamburg.

THEATERSCHMIEDE

The Theaterakademie is represented in October with three very different formats:

The DRAMA! Festival is entering its fifth round this year. As a teaching and learning format for students of scenic writing, dramaturgy, directing and acting, the festival has developed into an important talent platform in recent years.
The results of the joint work will be shown in scenic settings. We are also looking forward to Samuel Finzi, who will give this year's poetry lecture.

The third year of drama is already heading out into the wide world again. Hard to believe. In search of a new home, he says goodbye and presents the art he has learned here at the graduate audition.

The concrete organization of the three-day kick-off event of our Sustainable Theater Lab from 16 to 18 October is still a bit of a grab bag. With Talks and Walks, walks and encounters and together with guests from science + art and everyday life, the team will embark on a search for the theater of the future. What are the technical and aesthetic possibilities for a theater of the 21st century in the face of diverse ecological and social challenges?
More information will be available soon: stay tuned!

MULTIVIEW EXPERIENCE IN THE MEDIA LIBRARY

Step into our digital event room. Our media library has been relaunched and not only impresses with its large collection of around 300 film presentations, but also with a new interface and a number of enhanced functions. Come by and browse through the range of concerts, productions, lectures and documentaries.

The multiview videos are particularly exciting from a technical point of view, allowing you to take in different perspectives according to your own preferences and thus experience real added value compared to your fixed seat in the auditorium. A format that our webcast team will continue to expand. With up to 17 small cameras, you can focus on different angles, individual instrument groups, see what the stage manager is doing or the harpist's foot on the pedal, or how it feels to be directly on stage and in the middle of the performers.

Take a look and give us your feedback.
