OPEN THE DOOR!

Dear friends of the HfMT,

What a beautiful and sun-filled first weekend of Advent lies behind us! And we are already in the middle of it again: Advent, Advent - in the Christian faith, the time of expectation, anticipation and preparation for something great and healing. And even without a religious context, the pre-Christmas period is omnipresent and dominant in this country: we get ready, make everything beautiful, want to give joy and more, spend quality time together - that's a good thing.

For many of us, the hustle and bustle is accompanied by mixed feelings, a worried look at catastrophic developments in many places around the world, both far away and in our immediate vicinity. Linked to the question of "how to deal with this discrepancy?".

"On some days it works: repressing, blocking out all agonizing images, fending off all thoughts that disturb one's own comfort," writes Carolin Emcke in the Süddeutsche Zeitung on 16/17 November in view of the suffering of all parties to the conflict in the Middle East. "We wake up, we take a shower, cold or hot, short or long. We start the day and brew ourselves tea or coffee, we sweeten with sugar or add milk. Maybe we carelessly spill some sugar, maybe we forget the milk on the stove and it foams over. Then we put new milk on. No shortage anywhere."... and then: "We will be asked, later, by other generations or by the survivors, what our share was. There is no protective shield of conscience. We will have to answer for it." Emcke concludes her powerful text.

How can we address this discrepancy?
And what is our task as an educational and cultural institution?

"Culture is being used for too much," wrote several authors in DIE ZEIT recently. "Recently, for example, it is supposed to save or at least defend democracy, it is also supposed to help with education and remembering dark times, it is supposed to enlighten and connect people, enable discourse, "create spaces"." You also write "nothing will get better, but it will get brighter".

We would like to strive for this brightness and once again turn to the Christmas image: "Open wide the doors!" - Yes, with pleasure!

We invite you to join us at:
We invite you to the opera gala.
We invite you to studio concerts and examination concerts.
We invite you to a listening session and an art exhibition, a book presentation, a cinema evening, a concert lecture and a multimedia performance.

And we invite you to sit in the same boat with us and, with every bit of culture we experience and love, to feel the depth we need to recognize misery, grievances, need and injustice and to use all our empathy to constantly take a stand for peace, decency and justice.

Our December recommendations follow.
From the bottom of our hearts, your HfMT

On December 10, the Forum will be transformed into a broadcasting hall when Deutschlandfunk Kultur will be a guest with its audio rehearsal and present the HfMT in a moderated portrait concert. The program will be broadcast live, but can also be attended as a "real concert". With six contributions, we paint a multifaceted picture of the musical branch of our university. The program ranges from choral to chamber music, from multimedia performance to microtonal jazz.

The professional activity of a teacher requires a high degree of emotional flexibility and psychological resilience. For 50 years, the HfMT has therefore been offering the specialization module Music Thearapy for all music education courses. A book has now been published on this topic, in which the authors outline a comprehensive future version of multi-perspective cooperation in learning and teaching.

The young scholarship holders of The Young ClassX receive a very special form of support. Young people between the ages of 10 and 23 with a strong enthusiasm and passion for music and a particular instrument are given the opportunity to learn an instrument free of charge and thus improve their skills in the long term. The scholarship holders, some of whom are taught by HfMT students, present themselves in a varied concert.

Together with Dmitrij Chirkov (Master of Music Theory at the HfMT) and Prof. Tanja Becker-Bender, she takes a look at the rationally comprehensible and inexplicable aspects of musical compositions in the opening discussion. To illustrate the discussion, students will perform the selected work live.
