HFMT - IN GOOD VOICE

Dear friends of the HfMT,

It is the oldest instrument in the world and everyone has it: the voice
So far, so good - so simple, so all-encompassing.

The instrument we use to sing songs is rightly the focus of attention.
Singing is probably the most basic and natural form of musical expression we know. The voice makes its way out without hesitation, is always present and unmistakably ours. Songs have always accompanied us through all situations in life. Even in the oldest cultures, in all parts of the world and on the most diverse occasions, people have sung and continue to sing.

We use our voices to make contact with each other and express our thoughts and feelings. We use our voices to stand up for our beliefs or for other people, to help shape politics or to follow our inner voice.

Every year, the regional music councils choose the instrument of the year to give it special attention. Instrument of the Year 2025 is the voice.
The HfMT is taking part in the awards with around twelve events throughout the year, which we will be reporting on.

Further projects by our students, which we recommend to you in this newsletter, will be presented with a strong voice.

With best regards,
Your HfMT

THE YEAR OF THE VOICE

In February, we are presenting two concerts under the motto Instrument of the Year.

Firstly, we are celebrating the anniversary of the HfMT Chamber Choir, which has been enthusiastically dedicating itself to a capella literature from all eras at the highest level for 10 years and has already won several prizes in the process. The concert will feature works by di Lasso, Schütz, Brahms, Bruckner, Ostrzyga and Mäntyjärvi.

The four musicians in the concert will tackle a serious theme and a piece of dark history. Forbidden.Recognized.Forgotten to. Biographies and songs by ostracized composers will be presented in words and song. We will hear works that were created under the most difficult conditions during the tyranny of the Nazi regime and show an impressive diversity and depth.

EVEN MORE SINGING IN FEBRUARY

February is also full of powerful voices. Singing can be found at the HfMT in the Singing, Jazz Singing, Master's Song Interpretation and Master's Opera courses. There are also numerous choirs such as the Early Music Choir, the Church Music Choir, the Chamber Choir, the Women's Choir and the Jazz Choir. February is almost overflowing with them.

The program includes three studio concerts, the school music singing evening and a big evening for all singing classes; the Song Forum of the Song Interpretation course and a concert with vocal chamber music, the Opera Concisa and the song evening on ostracized music, the anniversary concert of the chamber choir and the two choral concerts "Libera me!" and "Ich hebe meine Augen auf zu den Bergen", SingOn! - the school music singing evening, two examination concerts and several bands with fabulous singers in the JazzHall.

Quantity does not always equal quality, but we wanted to make a point of it: February is our Month of the Voice!

Image and sound in dialog - Concert Lab x Gertsch in the Deichtorhallen

Fifteen musicians, one visionary artist, an experience that merges art and music: On three "Long Thursdays" in the Deichtorhallen, Franz Gertsch's Blow up exhibition will be the setting for a unique dialog between image and sound. From classical music to rock/pop, a multi-layered musical program will unfold, creating connections, setting contrasts and opening up new perspectives on art and music.

OPERA CONCISA

Rehearsals for Opera Concisa 2025

Opera Concisa - our popular opera format - is reinventing itself and should not be missed. We can look forward to the first part of the evening in particular. True to the motto "under construction", budding composers work with young directors and aspiring singers to develop texts, themes and music for the resulting music theater miniatures. Libretto, music, direction and singing: Everything about this is really new and you can see the high spirits of those involved in the rehearsal snapshot.

A worthwhile addition: dramaturgy students talked to the directors involved about their approaches and ideas. We will be uploading the interviews as podcasts on our website from Tuesday. You can find them directly under the event entry.

"Why do we need reporters if we are informed about everything that is happening on the front line via X?" The moderators of the Hamburg Talks for Culture and Media pose this question together with Olivia Kortas - correspondent for DIE ZEIT and ZEIT ONLINE from Ukraine. Olivia Kortas has been reporting from war-torn Ukraine for almost 3 years and brings us closer to the suffering, fear, hopes, thoughts and feelings of the people on the ground.

Turn 4 into 12: Prof. Wolf Kerschek - Head of the Jazz course and Professor of Composition and Ensemble Conducting - has taken on Vivaldi's Four Seasons and promises us a concert with his new interpretation The 12 Seasons that breaks all traditional format boundaries and invites us to experience music in a completely new way.

With the soloists - Opus Klassik prizewinner Niklas Liepe, the German-Finnish jazz violinist Laila Nysten and the virtuoso Dominican violinist Jose Francisco Pérez Colón - a chamber orchestra and a jazz band, the JazzHall will be remeasured. They play in every corner, the musicians move freely, the audience takes unusual places.

Music meets science: We would like to thank the Philharmonic State Orchestra for inviting us to the first themed concert in the Music and Science series and are looking forward to a multi-perspective view of heroism, which we will take together with the Science Slam speakers in the Elphilharmonie's Small Hall. While the symphony orchestra of the HfMT under the direction of Prof. Ulrich Windfuhr plays Beethoven's 3rd symphony - the Eroica - the thoughts of the science mediators will revolve around the topic of "positioning rulers".

The Eroica has already been performed in combination with Mozart's Piano Concerto in C minor in two concerts at the Forum.

CHOOSE BRAHMS!

On this memorable February 23rd, which had not yet been determined as the day of the Bundestag elections at the time of our event planning, in addition to the important task of casting your vote, you now have the opportunity to pass the time in the nerve-racking hours before the first projections with a Brahms-soaked matinée in the Great Hall of the Laeiszhalle. With the 2nd Piano Concerto and the 4th Symphony, we set a worthy caesura and can then look forward to the first results, reactions, discussions and analyses.

The Hamburg Symphony Orchestra will perform under the direction of the conducting class. On the piano we will hear Andrey Denisenko from Prof. Anna Vinnitskaya's class with his concert exam.

It is a very special pleasure for us to welcome the dancers of the Hamburg Ballet as our guests. In the Young Choreographers series, they will be showing their first own creations. For their debut at the HfMT, there was a fruitful collaboration with our composition classes, who have composed new works for some of the choreographies, which will merge into a total work of art consisting of dance and live music in the evening.
