HAPPY NEW YEAR - WHAT'S COMING UP AT THE HFMT

Titelbild

Dear friends of the HfMT,

We sincerely wish you a healthy and happy New Year and look forward to many encounters together.

In 2025, the HfMT will be celebrating its 75th anniversary. The celebrations will kick off with our debut in the main hall of the Elbphilharmonie with the HfMT Symphony Orchestra on March 30, but more on that later.

First, let's take a look at the upcoming January and marvel once again at the HfMT's bag of wonders, which is already bubbling over like a witch's kitchen early in the year. That's great - feel invited!

Happy New Year! on 8 January

Following the initiative of the regional music councils, we are ringing in the new year with the Year of the Voice and paying tribute to the instrument of 2025 with a number of outstanding events. Our first contribution will be heard in the main church of St. Michaelis as part of the Holy Communion. Under the title Evensong, the singers and some instrumentalists from the Seminar for Historical Performance Practice will perform a program of works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Heinrich Schütz and Hieronymus Praetorius under the direction of Prof. Isolde Kittel Zerer and Prof. Mark Tucker.

We will be listening to two very interesting online lectures in English followed by a discussion in the series Colloquium Music Theory with guests from the USA and France on current issues relating to music, analysis and society.
The evenings will be hosted by Prof. Dr. Jan Philipp Sprick and Roberta Vidic.

Our large hall - the Forum - will be available for the course, which is led by Prof. Thomas Grossenbacher from Zurich and focuses on playing, technique and expression. The JazzHall celebrates an evening of Latin jazz when the diversity of Latin American music meets jazz and improvisation. The evening's band plays with outstanding soloists from the Hamburg scene. And once again we are irresistibly drawn to the Michel: Prof. Antonio di Dedda - new professor of organ since the summer semester - will give a spectacular concert there with a varied program on the organs of the main church. From the crypt to the attic: Organs can be found everywhere in the Michel. No fewer than six instruments provide unique sound experiences and each organ has its own special features.

Special explorations on the harpsichord are offered at the Ernst Barlach Haus in the series Sound & Form series. In the concert by the harpsichord and recorder classes, the "mean-tone" and the "well-tempered" harpsichord are contrasted and thus take you into completely different worlds of sound.

We are looking forward to the visit of the 4b from the Westerschule Finkenwerder, who have been rehearsing a children's musical for several weeks as part of their music lessons and with the active support of some of our student teachers, which they will perform in the JazzHall.
Life in space - a rocking journey through the galaxy on 27 January

Anyone who has ever had the pleasure of talking to Dr. Benjamin Sprick knows that this is a highly exciting and profoundly philosophical context.
In a day-long symposium, he will examine the phenomenon of "radical relaxation" together with students and guests

And then we have another premiere in the program: directed by Master's student Sang-jin Han, Kurt Weill's opera buffa Der Zar lässt sich photographieren (The Tsar has himself photographed ) comes to the Forum stage. The opera is a comic and tense focus on human needs. Its characters try to
overcome the boundaries of social hierarchies and escape their social roles. But in the process, their dark sides come to light.

DOING GOOD - ACCOMMODATING GUESTS

Last but not least, we are hopefully renewing our appeal to potential hostel parents and would like to thank all those who have already offered a place to sleep.

We are expecting a lot of guests in July, when the 13th European Music Therapy Conference EMTC 2025 will take place at the HfMT Hamburg under the beautiful motto "Bridges". Around 600 participants will exchange views on current topics in music therapy research and practice in numerous lectures, workshops, panels and round tables.

We are looking for private accommodation for music therapy colleagues from low-income European countries or for the 60 student assistants and look forward to your support. If you can offer a free guest bed in the period between July 22 and 27, 2025, please send us a reply to this newsletter by January 12, 2025.
