APRIL 2024
Dear friends of the HfMT,
Here we are again and we're off to a flying start, even if the remains of Easter eggs are still stuck between our teeth :-)
In the first week of the semester, the 3rd drama class presents its final production, song duos take part in a challenging competition and the JazzHall invites you to an international encounter with New York stars.
So come and see for yourself - with great anticipation,
Your HfMT
HAMLET - TIME OUT OF JOINT
And once again it's time to say goodbye. The third-year drama students spread their wings and are ready to fly out and explore the stage. They can be seen once again in the Malersaal of the Schauspielhaus with their final production Hamlet - aus den Fugen. Under the direction of Paris-based director Catherine Umbdenstock, they are devoting themselves to Shakespeare's jewel Hamlet. "A play that generates resonance with all its ramifications and its entire political charge as a model for complex psychological and historical processes." The premiere on April 4 is already sold out. Tickets are still available for April 5 and 6 as well as May 5 and 10.

ON A PAR WITH NEW YORK JAZZ STARS
As part of the new JazzHall program, artistic director Tilman Oberbeck is initiating encounters between international guests and the Hamburg scene. There will be a prelude on April 5 and 6, when the renowned New York artists Aaron Parks (piano) and Ben Street (bass) will be guests. In the two Hamburg/New York sessions, the crème de la crème of the Hamburg scene will meet two of the most influential New York jazz musicians of the last 25 years. You can expect highly exciting musical encounters on two completely different concert evenings, both absolutely unique.
NOT ONLY GUSTAV MAHLER IN THE SONG COMPETITION
Thanks to the generous support of the ROCHNA Foundation, the Gustav Mahler Song Competition takes place every two years. Attractive prizes totaling €10,000 are awarded, as well as several special prizes offered by the Gustav Mahler Association. Song duos from the HfMT can apply. Interested guests can not only look forward to the prizewinners' concert, but can also follow the exciting selection process as part of the competition.
A special feature of the competition: in addition to works by Gustav Mahler, the compulsory program also includes works by Schubert and at least one work in the category "contemporary, global song" by a living composer.
Prof. Burkhard Kehring (Professor of Song Interpretation, initiator of the competition and chairman of the jury) is delighted that this year's program is exceptionally diverse: The program includes, for example, an Israeli song cycle from 1957 as well as the world premiere of an Italian work; the songs will be sung in Chinese, French, Hebrew and Italian, among others. The singers' mother tongues are very international and together create a broad Euro-Asian mix.

BELOVED ARIADNE
"Singing the beloved role of Ariadne, which I have sung on so many stages around the world, here at the university - here, where I was trained and am now allowed to train myself - is something very special for me," says Kammersängerin and voice professor Michaela Kaune. "And how great it is to make music with all the students who will hopefully soon be able to embark on a wonderful musical career!"
The program for the first phase of the university orchestra's work includes a concert version of Richard Strauss' opera "Ariadne auf Naxos". In addition to Michaela Kaune and alternating guest tenors for the role of Bacchus, the vocal ensemble is made up of students from the HfMT and the Lübeck University of Music.
For conductor Ulrich Windfuhr, the appeal of "Ariadne" lies in the congenial interaction of text and music. "Here, the genius of the poet (Hugo von Hofmannsthal) and the genius of the composer (Richard Strauss) meet and complement each other in a way that only Lorenzo da Ponte and Mozart or Ingeborg Bachmann and Hans-Werner Henze can. The great challenge here is to take the work on text and music equally to heart and to place oneself entirely at the service of the musical text."
FIRST ARTISTIC-SCIENTIFIC RESIDENCY AT THE LIGETI CENTER COMES TO AN END
As part of the "Artists and Scientists in Residence" program, the ligeti center enables interdisciplinary artistic-scientific projects. The selected artists, who specialize in sound and multimedia productions, can work on site with the various laboratories and conclude their three-month residency with a lecture and a final artistic performance.
Fredrik Mathias Josefson - the first artist in residence at the ligeti center - studied electroacoustic composition and visual arts in Stockholm and is an established figure in the experimental music scene. We are excited to see how he concludes his work and research stay musically.

MAKING FEMALE COMPOSERS HEARD
And once again we have to show our colors. Because we are not yet where we could and should be. Out of the archives and onto the music stands! We want to hear great music by women, not only from the present, but also from past centuries - unjustly unheard.
Our students show us the way. Another whole festival with music exclusively by women. Diverse, unique, incredibly good. Wonderfully enriched, compiled and staged. That's how a festival works. Clear the stage for 5 days of Feminale this time. Every day is worth it!!! Get your festival pass (there is no festival pass - everything is free of charge) and secure your tent pitch at the Alsterwiesen (unfortunately not allowed). But with this in mind, let us indulge ourselves.
WHAT ELSE IS GOING ON
can be found as usual in our online calendar of events.
We look forward to your visit!
