From May 6 to 8, the heads of the 24 German universities of music met at the Dresden University of Music for their summer conference. At the upcoming board elections, HfMT President Prof. Dr. Jan Philipp Sprick, Prof. Andrea Raabe, Rector of the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln and Axel Köhler, Rector of the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Stuttgart were elected as the new Vice Chairmen of the RKM Board. In future, they will complement the board team around the designated chairperson Andrea Tober from the Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin.

The new board will take office on October 1, 2026. At the same time, the RKM thanked the previous Board and outgoing Chair Christian Fischer for their commitment.

On the very first day of the meeting, it was decided to rename the conference the Rectors' Conference of the German Universities of Music in the HRK (RKM).

Furthermore, Ms. Dorothee Kalbhenn was elected as the new Artistic Director of the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy University Competition. She will take up her post in 2027. The cross-university study on manifestations and prevention of abuse of power at German music universities was also discussed. In addition, the empirical online survey of the status groups of teachers and lecturers was launched as a quantitative part of this study. The results are expected in the first quarter of 2027.

At its conference, the RKM also decided to reinstate the working group on staff shortages. The university management is thus following a recommendation for action from the panel "MiKADO & MULEM-EX: perspectives and consequences from both studies".

Other important topics, problems and issues were discussed, including the still unresolved issue of lecturers following the Herrenberg ruling and the GEMA reform and its consequences for universities of music.
